What are Conflict Diamonds?
Conflict diamonds, also known as blood diamonds, are diamonds that are mined in areas of political conflict and civil war, and whose sale goes to fund insurgent warfare and armed violence. Oftentimes, diamond miners working in such conflict zones are subjected to severe human rights violations and abuse. The extreme brutal conflict in Sierra Leone in the 1990s sparked a collective global awareness regarding the illegitimate practices in the diamond trade, and the moral responsibility of industry professionals to eliminate exploitation in the field. Today, numerous efforts are being consistently enforced as part of a universal effort to eradicate conflict diamonds.
What is the Kimberly Process?
In 2003 the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) was established and internationally adopted in order to monitor international diamond trade and to eventually eradicate conflict diamonds. Over 70 countries world-wide signed the Kimberley treaty and have agreed to only buy and sell from other participants. These participatory governments pledged to follow strict guidelines in the import and export of diamonds, certifying that they are legitimate, and subject to invoice review and mine review by an international committee.
