Learn About Pearl Rings

Pearl rings offer unique elegance and with a touch of classic femininity. Pearl ring settings span a wide range of styles since, unlike the diamond, the pearl has no traditional connection with marriage or engagements. Pearls are also among the world’s softest gemstones and can easily be drilled, cut and manipulated to fit a broad variety of settings. And while a pearl ring engenders an air of formality, pearls vary so widely in color, shape and size that many pearl rings are appropriate for both casual as well as formal affairs.

Popular Pearl Ring Styles

Pearl Cocktail Rings:

The pearl cocktail ring is by far the most common type of pearl ring.  Significantly larger and more ornate than the average engagement ring, anniversary ring or wedding ring, the pearl cocktail ring embodies the glamour  and charm of the 40s and 50s. A pearl cocktail ring often showcases a large centerpiece pearl and may be accompanied by other precious stones such as diamonds, sapphire and topaz.

Pearl Engagement Rings:

Pearl engagement rings are a unique variation on the standard diamond engagement ring. The pearl’s lustrous white sheen is thought to symbolize purity, grace, love and new beginnings, making it an especially romantic and meaningful engagement ring gemstone. Pearl engagement rings may also incorporate other precious gemstones, such as diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds.

Pearl Wedding Rings:

Pearl wedding rings may not be the most traditional wedding band style, but they offer a stunning take on the classic gold or platinum band.  Pearl eternity rings featuring small pearls running around the entire band, pearl cluster rings and vintage and antique pearl rings are common pearl wedding ring styles.

Cultured Pearls vs. Natural Pearls

Because natural pearls formed spontaneously in nature are extremely rare, most pearls on the market today are cultured pearls. Cultured pearls, also known as farmed pearls, should not be confused with synthetic or fake pearls. While man does play a part in the formation of cultured pearls, they are still formed naturally inside the mouths of clams, molluscan bivalves or oysters.

Pearl Color

Pearls are available in wide range of colors. Aside from the popular silver-white, pearls can be found in silver, gold, black, brown, purple, burgundy, green, pink and more. Consider the various pearl colors and pearl types when shopping for a pearl ring.
