Gemstone Guide

Adorn yourself with a piece of Gemstone Jewelry and add colorful significance and precious delicacy to your overall look.  Gemstone jewelry is not only eye-catching and attractive, but it is also unique, being imbued with meaning.  Believed by many cultures to hold unique and almost supernatural qualities and characteristics, gemstones have been used in protective amulets, bracelets, rings and necklaces for centuries. Gemstones have also come to represent specific milestone occasions such as anniversaries and birthdays.  Ranging from vivid and ornate to simple and traditional, gemstone jewelry is versatile, youthful and always tells a story.

Gemstone Jewelry Buying Basics

While gemstones were once a sign of wealth and status, modern technology has made them available to the general public. The gemstone industry is now an international industry; however, most people don’t know enough to understand the difference between a low quality and a high quality stone. Unlike diamond jewelry, gemstone quality benchmarks have yet to been standardized. Nevertheless, most agree that a quality gemstone is distinguished by its carat weight, its color, its clarity and its cut.

Gemstone Carat Weight

Gemstones follow the same standardized weighing system as diamonds: the diamond carat. The carat is equal to 2 grams, or 1/150th of an ounce and specifically measures density rather than size. This means that denser gemstones are inherently more valuable than those with a lower density.

Gemstone Color

The color of a gemstone is really its calling card. When evaluating a gemstone’s color it’s important to note the richness of the color, or conversely, its transparency; the unity of its color; and the intensity of its color. The richer the color, the more unified the color, and the more intense, the more valuable the gemstone will be.

Gemstone Clarity

Like diamonds, gemstones are created in nature by nature and are graced by nature’s footprint.  Small traces of minerals, air pockets and tiny fissures, which are also referred to as inclusions, can be found in every natural gemstone. Depending on the gemstone, inclusions may or may not affect the appearance or durability of the stone.  So take care to check well before you make your purchase.

Gemstone Cut

Gemstones can be cut in a variety of different ways. Again, due to the variety of gemstones, certain gemstones lend themselves better to cuts that create a light reflecting prism, and others are better fit for smooth spherical cuts or unique carvings.  However, no matter what the gemstone, the quality of the cut affects the quality of the stone.

Gemstone Jewelry Symbolism

Gemstone Bracelets, Gemstone Rings, Gemstone Pendants and Gemstone Necklaces may commemorate special occasions, strengthen one’s inner spirit or symbolize a particular value. Emerald, for example, is the official May birthstone, the Taurus Zodiac gemstone, the traditional 35 year anniversary gemstone and in Chakra mysticism, the emerald is believed to help heal the heart.
