Extra! Extra! Men’s earrings are here to stay! Yes, it’s true; earrings are no longer just for women. Men’s earrings are in, and over the past few decades have established themselves strongly within the fashion community. Earrings for men are no longer a fleeting, trendy style, they are an established fashion trend and are well on their way to becoming classics.
There are many different stories as to why and how men first jumped on the earring fashion train. One is that sailors were important pioneers of this style. The tale goes that they would pierce their ears with a Diamond earring as a way to secure a burial if and when they were lost at sea. It was hoped that upon the recovery of their body these diamonds and Gold stud earrings would be removed from their ears and used to pay for a proper burial by whom ever found them.
In the 1960’s and the 1970’s the ‘hippies’ were experimenting with many things, one of which was earrings. Men commonly wore earrings as a protest statement against society at large and convention. Quite quickly, however, this rebel earring wearing became not only a groovy trend, but also quite widely accepted. As time passed, and decades came and went, men’s earring’s remained in style in one form or another.
There have been many variations of men’s earrings throught the past 40 years. These have included everything from hoops to Diamond Studs, and one ear piercing to two. The ‘hot’ trend largely depends on the decade and on pop culture. In the 70’s a single small yellow gold hoop earring was very ‘in’. In the 80’s, however, we saw the emergence of small diamond stud earrings, perhaps to reflect nicely off of the disco balls of the time. The 90’s grunge era brought us multiple male ear piercings, not mention everything piercings. In the 21st Century we are seeing bigger diamond studs being worn, in large part, thanks to the wide spread popularity of hip hop music and fashion.
