What is a 0.25 or 1/4 Carat Diamond?
The relative size of a diamond is measured by carat(ct) weight. A 1/4 carat diamond weighs the equivalent of 50 milligrams, or 0.05 gram.
The Standard
Full one carat diamonds are the most common carat weight used in Engagement Rings and wedding rings. However, some couples may find that one carat diamonds areoverly expensive due to this carat size's popularity. One carat diamonds are substituted by a 0.25 or 1/4 carat diamonds in order to produce a more affordable, tasteful piece of high-end jewelry.
What About Size?
A diamond's carat weight willnot always correlate with its general appearance. 1/4 carat diamonds may, at times, appear smaller than a 0.22 ct diamond, depending on their cut and symmetry.
To delineate the size of a diamond, calculate the distance across the top (or crown) of the diamond (or the diameter in round cuts) to get a feel of how the diamond would appear from above. Also keep in mind that diamonds with a better cut grade are more likely to appear larger as their light return is increased by their symmetry and proportions. A 1/4 carat diamond's appearance may also be enhanced by a jewelry setting specifically designed to create the illusion of a larger sized diamond center stone.
0.25 Carat Diamond Prices?
Diamond prices increase indirect relation to a diamond's carat weight. Generally speaking, the larger a diamond's carat weight is, the higher its price will be. Consequently, 1/4 carat diamonds are considered relatively affordable and can cost significantly less than one carat or 1/2 carat diamonds. The price of a particular 1/4 carat diamond will also depend on the diamond's cut, clarity and color grades. However,in the case of a quarter carat diamond, the difference between its size and a one carat diamond will overshadow the diamond's other characteristics in terms of the precious gemstone's value and will be the deciding factor in evaluating the 1/4 carat diamond's price.
