What is a One Carat Diamond?
The carat (ct) is the name of the standard unit used to measure the weight and relative size of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams or 1/5 gram.
The Standard
The one carat diamond has become an engagement ring standard across the globe. Many couples see one full carat as the only proper diamond for an engagement and anything less as unsuitable for such a symbolic and important piece of jewelry. The idea of the one full carat stone is part of what makes it so valuable.
What About Size?
Diamond shoppers take note: the carat weight of a diamond is not necessarily correlated with how big the diamond looks. Some consumers believe that a one carat diamond will always appear larger than a .98ct diamond, but this is not always the case.
If you’re looking to maximize the size of your diamond, you should always check the distance across the top of the diamond (in round cuts, the diameter), note the diamond’s cut grade, and you should be careful with your choice of diamond setting. Diamonds with a better cut grade will reflect an optimal amount of light, making them appear brighter and larger and certain settings, such as halo settings, can make the center stone diamond appear larger.
One Carat Diamond Prices
The price of a diamond jumps significantly at every full carat. This means that a 1.00 carat diamond is worth nearly 20% more than a .99 carat diamond which is only worth about 1% more than a .98 carat diamond.

One carat diamonds are an extremely popular diamond choice for many different types of diamond jewelry. Diamonds of this size are often the best choice of center stone for Engagement Ring Settings, Diamond Stud Earrings, Diamond Pendants and much more.
One carat diamonds are an excellent choice and an even better value for those looking for a diamond that has both size and high clarity and color qualities. Buyers can often find one carat stones in very high qualities such as D, E or F for Diamond Color and FL or IF for Diamond Clarity. The prices are very affordable and size of diamond is not sacrificed.
One carat diamonds look fantastic in any shape, but are particularly appealing in the following Diamond Shapes: round brilliant, princess, radiant, asscher, emerald, oval, pear and others such as marquise. Often, smaller carat sizes will not look as fine and brilliant as a one carat diamond. When it comes to engagement rings settings, one carat diamonds can dramatically enhance nearly any setting or design. Popular settings and designs for one carat diamonds include solitaire and prong, bezel, tension, invisible and sidestone.
If a one carat diamond is to be paired with a sidestone engagement ring setting, the center stone diamond will often look much larger than it actually is in comparison to the much smaller sidestones. Sidestone Engagement Rings are considered to be a very affordable and wise investment, in addition to Diamond Bracelets and Diamond Earrings.
Diamond stud earrings enhance the look and especially the size of a one carat diamond, giving the earring a much more dramatic look. When paired with a diamond bracelet, one carat diamonds become the center piece and focal point of the bracelet itself giving the piece a very distinct look and design.
