What is a One Carat Diamond?

The carat (ct) is the name of the standard unit used to measure the weight and relative size of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams or 1/5 gram.

The Standard

The one carat diamond has become an engagement ring standard across the globe. Many couples see one full carat as the only proper diamond for an engagement and anything less as unsuitable for such a symbolic and important piece of jewelry. The idea of the one full carat stone is part of what makes it so valuable.

What About Size?

Diamond shoppers take note: the carat weight of a diamond is not necessarily correlated with how big the diamond looks. Some consumers believe that a one carat diamond will always appear larger than a .98ct diamond, but this is not always the case.

If you’re looking to maximize the size of your diamond, you should always check the distance across the top of the diamond (in round cuts, the diameter), note the diamond’s cut grade, and you should be careful with your choice of diamond setting. Diamonds with a better cut grade will reflect an optimal amount of light, making them appear brighter and larger and certain settings, such as halo settings, can make the center stone diamond appear larger.

One Carat Diamond Prices

The price of a diamond jumps significantly at every full carat. This means that a 1.00 carat diamond is worth nearly 20% more than a .99 carat diamond which is only worth about 1% more than a .98 carat diamond.
